Reading & Discussion | Moderation: Dr. Stephan Lesker (University of Rostock)
What has remained of the ancient ideal of a stoic lifestyle? Is it even possible in times of extremes and catastrophes? Or do we only have to record the fall into unforgiveness and indifferent isolation? Intelligent and elegant at the same time, Lethen describes the search for possibilities of serenity, from the Baroque to the wars of the present. In doing so, Helmut Lethen also returns to his own experiences and does not conceal how stoic principles have been shipwrecked historically and how the claim to "lead one's life" hardly stands a chance today.
Helmut Lethen, born in 1939, held a professorship in the Department of Modern German Literature in Rostock for many years. His book "Verhaltenslehren der Kälte" (1994) was his breakthrough as an author. This was followed by "Der Schatten des Fotografen" (2014, Leipzig Book Fair Prize) and "Der Sommer des Großinquisitors. On the Fascination of Evil" (2022).
