Heike Krieger of Freie Universität Berlin discusses the future of international law
International law is a supranational legal system that governs the rights and obligations of sovereign states. It is based on the Charter of the United Nations, which entered into force on October 24, 1945. However, the protection of human rights, the rule of law, and international law—which should serve as the benchmark for the actions of those in power—are increasingly falling by the wayside, even “in the West.”
Heike Krieger, professor of public law and international law at Freie Universität Berlin, will address in this event the tensions in this regard between 1945 and the present day and explore the question of how a counterbalance could be formed to current trends, which are also being fueled by U.S. President Trump’s fantasies about Greenland.
