Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I founded Germany's first seaside resort here - the large boulder in front of the Grand Hotel, the heart of the White City by the Sea, is a reminder of this. With the exclusive bathing establishment, the former Doberan spot rose to become a prestigious place, becoming a town and retirement home for many wealthy pensioners and rentiers. But the history of Heiligendamm is full of highs and lows, full of splendor and glory on the one hand and full of misfortune on the other.
