Greifswald's Urban Green Spaces, Part 1 | Karl-Marx-Platz | Credner-Anlage | Rubenow-Platz | New Campus
In a new series of events, Dr. Michael Lissok and Thoralf Weiß invite you to join them on cultural-historical and botanical city walks to interesting sites showcasing Greifswald’s garden culture.
The first tour begins at Karl-Marx-Platz (formerly Carlsplatz) near the “Kaiserlinde” and the memorial stone. The tour will explain the historical and current landscaping and layout of the square. The route continues along the rampart to the residential area within the city wall. From the rampart, the view extends to the station forecourt, with information on the landscaping and the monument to Mayor Päpke.
Rubenow-Platz, with the Rubenow Monument, is one of Greifswald’s oldest and most significant squares. The square’s appearance and function have changed over the centuries of its existence. We’ll follow its historical traces. The walk continues to the former spa park, the “English Garden,” and the “Giftbude”; to the Credner Garden, the former Naugangswiese; and to the zoo, the former city park. Finally, in the courtyard of the New Campus, we’ll visit the hospital garden there and learn about the former “Black Monastery” complex with its gardens, as well as the first initiative for a university botanical garden, a botanical collection, and a plant inventory by Prof. Jakob Gerschow.
