Launch of the lecture series “Infrastructures for Livable Rural Regions: Understanding, Preserving, and Shaping”
Opening remarks by Professor Dr. Volker Beckmann (University of Greifswald, Chair of General Economics and Landscape Economics)
Rural and peripheral regions face the challenge of adapting public service infrastructures to profound social, economic, and spatial changes. The presentation highlights key issues and research needs and explores how the adaptability of infrastructure systems can be understood and shaped. It introduces the approach of the DFG Research Group Adapt Infra, which examines adaptation processes from a systemic and sociotechnical perspective. The focus is on the interactions between the technical, institutional, and actor-related dimensions of infrastructure and their spatial, economic, and social contexts.
Volker Beckmann holds the Chair of General Economics and Landscape Economics at the University of Greifswald. His research focuses on the economics of sustainable land use, particularly on the assessment and management of land-use changes and their impacts on living conditions in rural areas. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Agricultural Policy, Nutrition, and Health-Related Consumer Protection (WBAE) and spokesperson for the DFG research group AdaptInfra.
Moderator: Professor Dr. Thomas Klinger
