Where: Venue: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Library, Johannes-Stelling-Straße 29, 19053 Schwerin, Germany
With a welcoming address by State Secretary Susanne Bowen, Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs
Architectural heritage is exposed to a variety of dangers, such as extreme weather events, fires, human error, vandalism and pests. Disasters such as the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, the collapse of the Historical Archives in Cologne or the floods in the Ahr Valley are impressive examples of these threats. Climate change in particular is making the protection of cultural heritage increasingly urgent. The lecture examines the threat to the architectural heritage in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the risks to historic buildings, gardens and parks and the measures needed to preserve this heritage.
As part of the evening lecture, the original report of the Stargard provost Gottlob Genzmer from June 29, 1764 will be shown from the holdings of the state library. On 56 impressive pages, he describes how a tornado of the highest category devastated the region around Woldegk - a contemporary documentation of a natural disaster of historic proportions.
The event will be followed by a small drink and an opportunity for discussion.
It is not necessary to register for this evening lecture. The event is free of charge. Parking is available on site.
