Classical Music

The concert features musical discoveries of entertaining music from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Anyone who has heard the Quartett Smaragd’s successful concerts in recent years will not be surprised by the program title “Discoveries”: Time and again, the four musicians unearth unknown music from the archives. This time, the discoveries consist of entertaining music from the late 18th and early 19th centuries by Franz Danzi, Joseph Schmitt, and Josef Myslivecek. To allow for a direct comparison with one of the great “classics,” the program also includes a work by Joseph Haydn.

The performers hail from the U.S. and Germany: Flutist Gesa Wulfhorst studied flute at the conservatories in Enschede under Ferenc Hutÿra and in Antwerp under Johan Rycken. She teaches at the music school in Coesfeld, in the Münsterland region. California-based violinist Susan Doering studied violin with Camilla Wicks, among others, and honed her skills with the Guarneri Quartet. There she met Dieter Wulfhorst, who had previously completed his cello studies with Friedrich-Jürgen Sellheim at the Hanover University of Music. After holding professorships for their respective instruments at American universities, the two now perform in various California orchestras. They form the Emerald Duo, which has enjoyed great success in concerts across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Sweden, and Germany. Joining these three instrumentalists—who “left the audience utterly enthralled,” as *Die Rheinpfalz* summarized after one of their joint concerts—is the Schwerin-based violist Reinhard Wulfhorst. For years, he has been rediscovering works from the Mecklenburg musical tradition that have been unjustly forgotten and bringing them back to the concert hall, publishing them through his music publishing house, Edition Massonneau.

Admission is free; donations are requested at the exit.
