DEFA Series 2026: It's Okay to Laugh / A man who doesn't want to stand out at all suddenly finds himself caught up in the machinery of a great career
80 Years of DEFA - DEFA Series 2026: It’s Okay to Laugh
FARßMANN OR ON FOOT INTO A DEAD END
based on stories by Hermann Kant, directed by Roland Oehme, 97 minutes,
DEFA Foundation: GDR/Germany 1990/91
Farßmann works as an accountant at a factory that manufactures medals and decorations. He is content to stay in the background. But the world around him has other plans: Suddenly, doors he never sought begin to open; people treat him with unexpected attention; and eventually, he is even tasked with managing a million-mark donation from abroad. The more eagerly others try to promote him, the more determinedly Farßmann searches for a way out. *
* Roland Oehme’s satirical comedy, based on a story by Hermann Kant, was made during the final years of the DEFA and was released in theaters in 1991. Its humor thrives on the contrast between a modest man and a bureaucratic system in which every supposed opportunity triggers new complications. A headstrong, subtle look at career dreams and the absurdities of everyday life.
The introduction will be given by our association member and DEFA specialist Rüdiger Weber.
