In the 1990s, Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was still considered the next big thing in racing and the top tier of the sport, Formula 1. But even as a race car driver, you put your body on the line and ultimately have to be prepared for the worst. For Sonny Hayes, this meant the end of his career as a professional Formula 1 driver following a catastrophic accident on the racetrack. From then on, he drifts through lower racing classes and, three decades after his fateful accident, still manages to scrape by as an occasional racer, trying to capitalize on his former Formula 1 reputation. His former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) knows this. He is now the head of the APXGP team, which appears to be languishing at the very bottom of the Formula 1 standings, seemingly without hope or points. Since Cervantes has almost nothing left to lose, he wants to bring Hayes back to the top tier and have him, together with rookie Joshua Pearce—known as Noah (Damson Idris)—serve as a lifeline for the team.
