Henrike Heller, co-curator of the special exhibition “Women Artists in Ahrenshoop around 1900,” leads a tour of the exhibition, offering fascinating insights into the lives and work of the women artists. The tour focuses on the personal life stories and individual career paths of the women featured in the exhibition. Using selected works as examples, Henrike Heller tells the stories of female artists who came to Ahrenshoop around the turn of the century, worked here, and sought to forge their own paths through their art.
This highlights how varied their life stories were and what personal, social, and economic conditions shaped their artistic careers. The tour also examines the specific challenges women faced around 1900. Access to professional artistic training was often difficult or even impossible for women, as was admission to established art academies and artists’ associations. Added to this were societal expectations of women, limited career opportunities, and the difficulty of balancing artistic work with the roles assigned to them.
