Artists' Colonies in Northern Germany from the Mahlfeld and Schumann Collections
The unspoiled natural landscape, the turbulent Baltic Sea, the unique light—for centuries, artists have found wonderful sources of inspiration in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the artists’ colonies in Ahrenshoop, Schwaan, and on the island of Hiddensee, influential artists created unique works. Many of these works are in private collections and are rarely, if ever, exhibited in museums. At the Ahrenshoop Art Museum, we will be showcasing a large number of these paintings from North German artists’ colonies—drawn from the Mahlfeld and Schumann collections—during the winter of 2026/2027.
