In September 1816, court councillor Charlotte Kestner visits the city of Weimar to see her childhood sweetheart Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who once immortalized her in "The Sorrows of Young Werther", again after 44 years. Word of her arrival spreads quickly in Weimar. Curious visitors arrive and everyone eagerly awaits the meeting between the now 67-year-old prince of poets and his early love from Wetzlar. The meal together in a larger circle is characterized by Goethe's reserve and noncommittal amiability as well as the guests' eagerness to present themselves wittily. Through her encounters with Adele Schopenhauer, Charlotte also hears critical remarks about the statesman Goethe. Alone with Goethe, she has a brief conversation in the carriage after a visit to the theater. She leaves in the certainty that this chapter of her life is finally closed.
This film is being shown in cooperation with the Goethe-Ortsverein Güstrow.
