For the first time, Joachim Trier's latest film focuses on a family rather than an individual - Cannes Critics' Choice Award 2025
Norway/Denmark/Sweden/Germany/France 2025, Director: Joachim Trier, Length 133 min.
DA: Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsgård a.o.
The villa in which the Borg family has lived for generations is a jewel of Norwegian dragon style. It is winding, but open-hearted. Rooms and staircases invite exuberant play and all the walls tremble when adults slam the doors in an argument. This setting is indispensable for the film and has its own voiceover, which reports from off-screen how the rooms and their inhabitants lived. When Gustav Borg suddenly returns to his daughters' lives after his wife's funeral, the villa becomes an emotional minefield. The father was once a famous director, hasn't made a film for 15 years, but he is still an unshakeable egocentric. Now he has brought a script about his mother's suicide, which he wants to film on location. His daughter Nora, a celebrated stage actress, is supposed to play the leading role, but brusquely rejects the offer and Gustav has to look for another actress.
