Kristen Steward's adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch's autobiographical cult book is a brute, courageous and expressive directorial debut.
USA/France/Latvia 2025, Director: Kristen Steward, Length: 128 minutes
DA: Imogen Poots, Thora Birch, Susannah Flood, Tom Sturridge and others.
We first meet Lidia as an adult. For years, her mother ignored the fact that her father raped his daughters and turned to alcohol instead. The older sister is hit first. Almost a child herself, she runs away out of a pure instinct for self-preservation and leaves Lidia behind. Lidia also wants to leave. Even as a teenager, she trains hard to become a professional swimmer, literally wants to swim her way out, get to university on a sports scholarship, as far away from home as possible. But the traumas run deep and travel with her. The film tells of this almost unbearable childhood, the failure as an adult, of drug abuse, the discovery of queer sexuality, of toxic relationships, but above all of writing as a process and self-discovery.
