François Ozon presents a sophisticated thriller that tells a story full of surprises in radiant autumnal images
France 2024, Written & directed by Francois Ozon, Length: 104 minutes
DA: Helene Vincent, Josiane Balasko, Ludivine Sagnier, Pierre Lottin and others.
Set in an idyllic village where Michelle, an eager churchgoer with a little house and a garden, cooks, bakes and distributes love and money, Ozon's story has the traits of a fairy tale, possibly with a witch. Michelle and her friend are former prostitutes, full of
guilt about having "messed things up" with their children, and cherish their little ideal world: complex female characters full of gentle resilience. The family drama begins with a walk in the woods where the friends are looking for mushrooms. Michelle cooks a meal from the porcini mushrooms for her daughter Valerie, who is visiting from Paris with her young son Lucas, but Valerie ends up in hospital having her stomach pumped. She claims that Michelle wants to kill her and forbids her to have any contact with Lucas. The old lady, heartbroken over the loss of her grandson, wonders desperately how this mushroom poisoning could have happened. Is she suffering from dementia?
