Silver Bear for Best Acting Performance in a Leading Role / Berlinale 2026
Austria / Germany 2025, Director: Markus Schleinzer, Length: 93 minutes
DA: Sandra Hüller, Caro Braun, Marisa Growaldt, Godehard Giese, Robert Gwisdek and others.
In the turmoil of the 30 Years' War, a mysterious soldier appears in a remote Protestant village. Taciturn, thin, his face disfigured by a scar. The stranger claims to be the heir to a long-abandoned estate and can produce a document confirming his claim. Much to the displeasure of the village community. However, the stranger does everything in his power to find happiness here. But his quest for recognition and acceptance is made more difficult by his secret: the soldier has made his way into the village under a false identity, a false name and pretending to be of the wrong gender. (From the promotional material from the film distributor)
"How this rose rears up, persistently and quietly conquers a life and yet perishes because of its falseness is a rare, deeply moving cinematic event. Sandra Hüller is magnificent." (ARD quote)
