n New York in the early 1950s, Marty Mauser works as a shoe salesman in his uncle's store, but dreams of furthering his career as a table tennis player. He has long since proven his extraordinary talent, and now he wants to win the British Open in London and popularize his sport in the USA. Marty's ambitions are as great as his chutzpah. He steals the money for his trip to London from his uncle's safe and once in the UK, he not only stays in an unaffordable hotel, but also makes advances to the older Kay Stone - an ex-Hollywood star and industrialist's wife. In the end, he loses to Japan's Endo in the final and sets his sights on revenge at the World Championships in Tokyo. But this time, too, the travel money is missing, the police in New York want to arrest him for the robbery in the shoe store, the London hotel is pressing for payment and he has impregnated his married childhood friend Rachel. But Marty can't be stopped.
