Director Hannu Salonen tells this true story as a gripping sports and historical drama. It’s not just about medals, but also about trust, discipline, teamwork, and the power to surpass one’s limits together.
Ratzeburg, late 1950s. Germany is divided, and the horrors of the war are still ever-present. Here, Karl Adam teaches math, physics, and physical education. He encounters a generation of young men who grew up without fathers and are searching for direction. Adam recognizes their potential and molds these outsiders into a rowing team. With unconventional training methods, an iron will, and little respect for the established officials, he sets his eight on a path to success. The story also centers on the young rower Hans Lenk, whose great love, Ulla, lives on the other side of the inner-German border. While the team grows ever closer on the water, political divisions, personal rivalries, and the shadows of the Nazi past remain palpable on land. Their athletic journey ultimately leads to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where the Ratzeburg eight makes history.
