“A Letter to David” is a personal letter from filmmaker Tom Shoval to David Cunio, who was abducted by Hamas from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023, and held hostage in Gaza for 738 days.
Ten years ago, David and his twin brother Eitan played the lead roles in Shoval’s award-winning debut film *Youth* (Berlinale 2013).
The film centers on the close bond between two brothers and a kidnapping—an event that today seems like a cruel twist of fate. Shoval uses unedited behind-the-scenes footage and casting tapes from the original film for his multi-layered documentary, which explores the inexplicable connections between life and cinema, memory and reality, and the catastrophic consequences of war. We are screening the film in its updated version, as the brothers were reunited with their families earlier this year.
“A Letter to David” is not only a moving documentary that touches the heart with its humanity; it is a call to remember, a tribute to all the hostages and victims of this war.
