Fitting in, just not standing out, that is the price of arrival for Vio. She has to be more diligent - and more beautiful. Shortly after the fall of the Romanian dictatorship, Vio came to Germany from Banat with her parents. Despite all the resistance, she found her place in society. Years later, however, when her young daughter is scarred in an accident, she is in danger of breaking down because of her self-reproach: Can her child never become a beautiful woman again? What will she be denied - and what will she be spared? At the same time, the novel tells a story from the 18th century: of a woman from the Banat who has to pay a high price for being considered desirable. What is inherited, what does society inscribe - and how do you leave external standards behind? An intense debut "about origins, motherhood and the ideals of beauty that women have always been at the mercy of" (Mareike Fallwickl).
