The Place Between - Minttu Saarinen (FIN)
Finnish artist Minttu Saarinen opens the newly established Baltic Sea Fellowship, which is awarded in cooperation between the Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop and the Kunsthalle Rostock, with an expansive installation. In her exhibition at the Kunsthalle Rostock's Schaudepot, she is showing a breathtaking installation entitled The Place Between. She has transformed hundreds of Karelian pierogi into small works of art and placed them on all levels of the room. The so-called Karjalanpiirakka are Finnish dumplings that are always prepared by women. They represent a centuries-old tradition. The shapes of the pierogi are reminiscent of vulvas and the material is based on research into traditional fabrics from the country's own history. The Finnish artist thus combines folklore, feminist research and contemporary art.
For the first time, the Kunsthalle Rostock, in cooperation with the Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop, is offering a fellowship for artists from the international Baltic Sea region. The Baltic Sea Fellowship includes a two-month residency at Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop and a subsequent one-month exhibition in the LAB of the Kunsthalle Rostock's Schaudepot. There, the artists can present the results of their work on the Baltic Sea coast and come into contact with the public. The aim is to make the Baltic Sea region visible and tangible as an artistic space. At the same time, extensive networks are to be established with artists, art venues and institutions. The Kunsthalle Rostock acts as an international hub for the Baltic Sea region, while Künstlerhaus Lukas is responsible for the artistic promotion and support of the scholarship holders.
