If there ever was an East German rock legend, it was undoubtedly Klaus Renft. It has already been 20 years since Klaus Renft passed away and went to rock ’n’ roll heaven. Thuringian musician Andreas Schirneck is taking this as an opportunity to go on tour with a tribute show. Through rarely seen photos and original documents, a portrait of the sensitive anarchist is painted. Of course, the focus is on Renft’s significance for rock music in Germany, but also on his legendary ability to hold his liquor and his reputation as a ladies’ man. Since the two musicians were friends, audiences can also expect private insights into the life of this grumpy, chaotic figure. The show features quotes from Renft’s Stasi files as well as from his diaries. Who was the man whose bass guitar is on display at the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn (right next to Kohl’s sweater, of all things!)? “How much does the world cost? I’d like two!”—was one of his favorite sayings and could also serve as a motto for his life. Who, for example, knows that Renft was also a master with paint and a brush and even had exhibitions in Malta? The whole thing is spiced up with stories so bizarre that only life itself could have written them. In the second part of the evening, Schirneck will sing a selection of songs from the repertoire with which both musicians toured the country for years as the “LSD—Löhmaer Song Duo.” Look forward to a very special evening—not just for fans of East German rock!
