AND THE WHALE SPITS ME OUT – A Musical Reading with Jan Simowitsch
Jan has quit his job as a church musician, a leadership role that meant a great deal to him. To clear his head, he books a spot on a ferry—for himself and his bike—that will take him from Denmark to the Faroe Islands. Eighteen rocky islands of volcanic origin, situated between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic. In April, it’s cold, stormy, and rainy there. And so the trip becomes not only an adventure in itself but also, for Jan, a journey of self-discovery.
The biblical story of Jonah, who is swallowed by a whale because he did not obey what he was told, is wonderfully interwoven with Jan’s own reality in *And the Whale Spits Me Out*. A fascinating, true story of setting out, new beginnings, and meaningful encounters that inspires reflection and encourages listeners to heed their own inner voice.
Jan Simowitsch, born in 1980, took a position as a church musician specializing in popular music in Bad Segeberg after completing his piano studies at the Rostock University of Music and Drama. From 2016 to 2024, as director of the Pop Institute of the Nordkirche, he helped shape the musical and liturgical development of the Evangelical Church. In addition to his full-time work, Jan Simowitsch is deeply engaged with the interplay of words and music.
