A sensitive and compelling play about depression
"All That Is Beautiful" with Katja Klemt
A sensitive and moving play about depression
How does a seven-year-old child react to their mother’s suicide attempt? You try to cheer her up, to convince her that there are many things worth living for. The best thing to do is write a list: it starts with 1. Ice cream, 2. water fights, and it keeps growing as life goes on—at first to keep from losing heart, later because of the overwhelming feeling of first love. This childhood project has already become a constant driving force in life, one that doesn’t even stop at 10,000.
Depression is part of our everyday lives and has many facets—it’s never funny. This makes it all the more astonishing that the British playwright Duncan Macmillan has managed to write a humorous, sensitive, and captivating play on this subject. The constant engagement with this deadly serious topic leads to exactly the opposite—we experience a passionate plea for why life is absolutely worth living.
