Promise of light Advent soundscapes through the centuries
Festive and contemplative sounds from baroque splendor to spherical modernity await the audience at this year's Advent concert by the choirs of St. Spiritus on the 3rd Sunday of Advent, December 14, 2025 at 15:00 in the STRAZE Kulturhaus.
The highlight of the concert is the magnificent Magnificat by Francesco Durante, a baroque masterpiece full of contrasts, radiant sonority and deeply felt spirituality. The work is one of the most important settings of the Canticle of Mary and combines Italian lightness with sacred dignity. Durante masterfully combines traditional polyphonic writing with early classical elements in this composition. The work will be performed by soloists, the chamber choir "Late Night Singers" and the Vorpommersche Streicherensemble with basso continuo.
The pre-Christmas program features selected a cappella literature from different eras, from Gregorian chant, performed by the male vocal ensemble "Meine Herren!" to contemporary choral music, which will immerse the audience in the special atmosphere of the Advent season. The choir of St. Spiritus will present choral works on the symbols of Advent and perform a work by the Baroque composer Briegel with the instrumental ensemble. The orchestra will take the audience back to the Italian Baroque era with a magical symphony by Schiassi. Touching recitations, performed by Anette Gerhardt, will reflect the hope of Advent. Music director Dr. Sigrid Biffar is the overall artistic director and will once again invite the audience to make music together with familiar tunes in open singing.
