Longing for consolation C. D. Friedrich and Romanticism

Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is omnipresent on the 250th anniversary of his birth. He, who was often misunderstood during his lifetime and was considered an eccentric, shaped the image of Romanticism like no other. Perhaps his paintings, whose pictorial inventions coincide with a time of upheaval and uncertainty, touch us so much because the present is experienced in a similar way. He drew his pictorial inventions from his rich treasure trove of sketches from his years of travel and from his "romantic feeling". For him, motifs stand for the most diverse levels of meaning. The lecture explores the questions: What is Romanticism and what characterizes this epoch? How did Friedrich create his paintings, what material did he use to compose motifs in his studio, what levels of meaning are addressed? A friendly invitation to a pictorial journey in the footsteps of C.D. Friedrich!
