The 19-piece ensemble led by bandleader Andreas Pasternack is considered one of the most popular big bands in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is known for its unique instrumentation and unmistakable sound. Their wide-ranging repertoire spans from jazz standards of the 1920s to modern big band compositions and includes swing, Latin, rock, tango, rumba, Viennese waltzes, and pop hits—an evening that offers something for almost every musical taste.
Andreas Pasternack, saxophonist, singer, and host, has been a driving force behind the band since 1999. He studied at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, has performed in Poland, Belgium, Japan, and the U.S., and hosts the weekly program “Jazztime” on NDR 1 Radio MV. In 2007, he received the Culture Award from the Hanseatic City of Rostock as well as the Culture Promotion Award from the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With his charming and humorous stage presence, he guides the audience through an evening that combines a joy of performance with musical diversity at a high level.
The Pasternack Big Band was founded in 1989 as the Rostock Conservatory’s big band under the name Baltic Sea Big Band and has performed under its current name since 2007. The open-air concert in front of the Ahrenshoop Art Museum offers a rare opportunity to experience the ensemble in the Baltic resort of Ahrenshoop —a summer evening on Fischland-Darß-Zingst that appeals to swing and jazz enthusiasts, vacationers, and locals alike.
