Hard-working workers' hands, fashion shows and cannon shots, prosthetic hands, with the bourgeoisie nibbling snacks in the dining car in between. In this documentary, consisting only of archive material, all the images are well composed. The motifs quickly develop a pull, and what we see becomes political: Hitler salutes and hundreds of thousands of soldiers traveling home or to the barracks by train. Deportations, documented attacks by the Luftwaffe. These are images of life and death that are juxtaposed in a value-free manner. They form artistic links in a collage, merging between the tracks to form a story. TRAINS paints a collective portrait of the people of 20th century Europe and captures their hopes, desires, dramas and tragedies.
