Mycenae - 150 years of the excavation of the royal tombs by Heinrich Schliemann

In 1876, Heinrich Schliemann dedicated himself to the excavations in Mycenae. Following the Greek geographer and travel writer Pausanias, he searched for the tombs of kings from ancient times. Within the castle walls, he found a round tomb with 5 shaft tombs containing valuable grave goods. In addition to ceramics, valuable alabaster vessels and richly decorated weapons, the artistically designed gold finds were particularly spectacular. These included the so-called "Mask of Agamemnon".

150 years later, the Schliemann Museum Ankershagen is presenting a special exhibition on the circumstances of Schliemann's excavations and takes a detailed look at the individual graves and the history of their finds.
