COUNT VON BOTHMER: Caspar David Friedrich - INSIDE! To mark the birthday of the Greifswald Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), pianist Stephan Graf von Bothmer will be our guest—performing his live piano composition to accompany the slide show.

In a visual slideshow, Bothmer brings the magic of Caspar David Friedrich’s Romanticism back to life and lends his paintings a new, unprecedented depth.

Unique and deeply moving: Stephan Graf v. Bothmer pays musical tribute to the master of Romanticism, Caspar David Friedrich, on the occasion of his birthday. A native of Greifswald, Friedrich drew inspiration from the Baltic Sea throughout his life for his artistic motifs. His places of work—Greifswald, Stralsund, and many locations on Rügen—are still recognizable today in his lifelike masterpieces, which are celebrated in museums and galleries around the world.

With his spectacular silent film concerts, Stephan Graf v. Bothmer fills large concert halls and intimate theaters across five continents. Divine divas, honorable gentlemen, ruthless crooks, and eccentric characters are brought to life in a contemporary light through his newly composed music. But he also brings art to life through his concerts—whether it’s works by the old masters or new digital artworks. His music blends with the artworks and seems to draw the audience right into the images. Bothmer sets the mood for the program with short films, music, and commentary.

Mysticism, melancholy, death, and redemption. No 360° projections that celebrate the technology itself rather than the artworks. Masterpieces by the most significant artist of German Romanticism presented as a slide concert. The show features a single screen, and each work is given ample time to make an impression. Zoom-ins allow viewers to experience everything from the grand composition down to the finest brushstroke. Subtle pans and zooms-out allow figures and landscapes to gradually come into view, so that at times a figure is absorbed into the immensity of nature, or the gaze is lost in the light of the setting sun. All of this unfolds so slowly and unobtrusively that you can immerse yourself deeply in the artworks. It’s as if you’re penetrating the works layer by layer.

The music offers a deeply personal and profound interpretation, drawing the audience into the images. Over the course of 66 minutes, you experience the great master’s artistic work in a truly unique way.
Experience Caspar David Friedrich from the inside out!
