Christian Morgenstern's poems set to new music / With Hans-Werner Meyer, Markus Runzheimer and Reinhardt Repke
20 years of the Dead Poets' Club! An anniversary to celebrate!
"O ghastly tangles of life, we hang here by the red thread!" - thus begins the "Bundeslied der Galgenbrüder" by Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914), who published his "Galgenlieder" in 1905. This collection of 40 poems soon enjoyed great popularity. Poems such as "Der Lattenzaun", "Sophie, die Henkersmaid" and "Das Mondschaf" are legendary; "Der Werwolf" is even school material. "One laughs oneself sick", Tucholsky said, "admiring afterwards, having become more serious, a deep lyricism, which only at the last moment has turned into fun (....). In the end, one does not know what to admire more: the clowning or the profound wisdom."
Morgenstern himself wrote that "gallows poetry" is a piece of worldview and that the world is viewed differently from the gallows. With the gallows songs, he wanted to "spread a little spiritual lightness, cheerfulness and freedom (...)".
The actor Hans-Werner Meyer ("Letzte Spur Berlin") could be won as a singer for the anniversary project. Bassist Markus Runzheimer ("Element of Crime") is also back and will also be playing percussion this time. Hans-Werner Meyer will not only sing, but also play the violin. Reinhardt Repke, who has set the poems to music, will be playing guitar as usual.
