A technical college was opened in Neustadt-Glewe as early as 1882. However, the technical secondary school for construction, mechanical engineering, and mill construction was initially located in the historic castle. On November 4, 1890, the new technical college on Ludwigsluster Straße was officially inaugurated.

The new technical college, built in the classical style, brought great benefits to the town. Its inauguration meant that even more master craftsmen and technicians could be trained in Neustadt-Glewe, now also in the trades of carpentry and electrical engineering. Just three years later, 454 students attended the technical college, which offered excellent training opportunities at the time. So it is hardly surprising that two students from Neustadt-Glewe caused a sensation in 1902. With a car they had built themselves, they explored the area around the town and ensured that the technical college was talked about beyond the borders of Lewitz. Just a few years later, another student made headlines. Mecklenburg's first aviation pioneer was also a student at the Neustadt technical college. In 1910, he built a biplane with two propellers, and in the 1930s, a glider was also developed and built here. The educational institution's good reputation attracted students from the kingdoms of Prussia, Bavaria, and Saxony, from the free Hanseatic cities of Hamburg, Lübeck, and Bremen, as well as from Switzerland, Russia, Brazil, Finland, Holland, Austria-Hungary, and Egypt. Nevertheless, the technical college was closed in 1935 to make way for a flying school. The building was used for a completely different purpose in 1945/46, when the city urgently needed a hospital and military hospital.
