Without the dunes Hiddensee would break through and fall into 2 parts. This has already happened once in 1864. The Baltic Sea flooded the island and tore a channel through the islet. It took the people of Hiddensee 25 years to patch up the hole with shovels and carts. This stone wall, a few hundred meters long, bears witness to this.
