Stop 01 Plau am See / An der Metow

This charming little town has a long history, a picturesque old town and numerous monuments. Originating from a Slavic settlement of fishermen and raftsmen, the town was first mentioned in documents in 1235 under the name Plawe. Plau forms a gateway to the Müritz-Elde waterway and has a number of technical buildings associated with it. The historic lift bridge is well worth seeing. It was built in 1916 and is lifted up to 1.60 m every day if necessary. In the city center you will also find the lock bridge known as the "chicken ladder". The Elde lock below the bridge dates back to the 19th century and was modernized at the turn of the century. Passenger ships dock and depart daily at the nearby, newly designed harbor promenade. Here you can also climb the newly built lighthouse and view Plau and the lake from above. There is also a rest area for water hikers and the local Plau fishermen look forward to your visit. Old half-timbered houses characterize the town center. Here you will also find the way to the so-called Lehm- und Backsteinstraße. With its beautiful architectural buildings and bright red bricks, the clay and brick road is part of European cultural history. If you want to see Lake Plau from the water, you can explore the lake by canoe.

In Alt Schwerin, you also have the option of changing to the Southern Railway seasonal service. In summer, the ODEG RB 19 runs from Plau am See via the island town of Malchow to Waren and from Plau am See to Parchim on Friday afternoons, at weekends and on public vacations.
