Since 2017, the Dargun monastery and castle complex has been home to a fish ladder consisting of 90 steps that spans a height difference of 9.5 meters.
In 2017, the outlet of Klostersee Lake in Dargun was modified. The new weir that was installed regulates the water level via a mechanical balancing system, without human intervention. The intention is to prevent future flooding, such as has occurred in the past. A fish passage was constructed downstream of the weir. As a result, the Röcknitzbach is now passable all the way to Klostersee, in accordance with the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive.
This means that fish species born in the headwaters of rivers can swim downstream toward the sea without being hindered by weirs, control structures, or barrages. So that they can later return to their place of birth to spawn their own offspring in the same spot. The fish ladder comprises a total of 90 steps and overcomes a height difference of approximately 9.5 m.
