After fourteen years behind bars, Anker (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) is released from prison. The loot from his robbery back then has never turned up—only his brother Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen) knows where it’s hidden. But in the meantime, Manfred’s mental state has deteriorated significantly, and his memories of the money’s whereabouts have grown hazy. Together, the unlikely brothers embark on a quest that becomes more than just a hunt for the loot. As they struggle through their past and old wounds, they are faced with an even more important question: Who are they really—and can there be a fresh start for them?
For years, American Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster) has called Paris home. There, she has not only put down roots but has also earned an excellent reputation as a skilled psychotherapist. But then her patient Paula (Virginie Efira) dies. According to the police, it was a suicide—and that throws Lilian completely off track. But she has doubts about the official account of Paula’s death. So the therapist begins investigating on her own—together with her ex-husband Gabriel (Daniel Auteuil), who is still mourning her. And it quickly becomes clear: the case isn’t as cut-and-dried as the police would have us believe.
No sooner is he out of jail than Thomas (Christoph Maria Herbst) is confronted with surprising news: a mother he’s never met has left him a valuable house. The dream of a fresh start under the Spanish sun seems within reach—but there’s a problem. His half-brother Roland (Nico Randel) already lives in the house; he’s a passionate fan of classic cars with a penchant for weight training and sports cars. Not only does he have a steady job, but he also has Down syndrome—and a lifetime right of residence. Thomas moves in without hesitation and tries every trick in the book to get rid of his roommate. Manipulation, provocation, petty meanness—he leaves no stone unturned. But Roland confronts him with determination, openness, and surprising strength. What begins as a power struggle evolves into an encounter that changes them both. Step by step, a deep bond grows between the dissimilar brothers.
