Mecklenburg Switzerland

Vacation in the vast Solitude of Nature with Numerous Castles and Manor Houses

Mecklenburg Switzerland is the vacation destination of choice for those who want to recharge their batteries in seclusion. With its unspoiled nature, the sparsely populated region offers an ideal retreat for hikers and nature lovers.

Aerial view of Lake Teterow with Burgwallinsel, green shores, fields and Teterow in the background.
An idyllic walk through the park of the Romantik Hotel Gutshaus Ludorf: surrounded by old trees and green meadows, nature invites you to relax and unwind.

Surprising perspectives open up again and again behind every hill and every bend. Bright yellow rapeseed fields alternate with lush green pastures, deep blue lakes with shady woodlands. Corn poppies and cornflowers line the fields, gnarled fruit trees and mighty chestnuts line the roads. A world long thought lost can be found in the villages, where the brick barns are often larger than the churches.

Mecklenburg Switzerland not only enchants visitors with its charming nature, but also with its cultural wealth. Between the glistening waters and wooded hills, visitors will always find Manor houses and castles with old as well as an incredible wealth of cultural monuments and art treasures, museums and galleries.

What activities can you do in Mecklenburg Switzerland?

Hiking excursions and bike tours

With its hilly landscape, Mecklenburg Switzerland is the ideal starting point for varied cycling and hiking excursions. In addition to regular motorsport races, valuable collector's items from automotive history can be admired in the Sternberg Classic Car Museum and at regional classic car meetings. Holidaymakers who own a classic car themselves will find the roads leading through nature parks and along the German avenues a wonderful backdrop for long drives.

When does the hill climb race in Teterow take place?

The legendary Bergring motorcycle race is held every year at Whitsun - a highlight among motorsport fans with historical flair.

Which cultural sights should not be missed?

Güstrow Castle (Renaissance castle), Ernst Barlach Studio House, Teterow Castle Island (9th century), Dargun Monastery/Castle Ruins, Mitsuko Castle (Japan Museum & Contemporary Art).

Is the region also suitable for families?

Absolutely! The Wildpark-MV offers encounters with wolves, bears and lynxes - even overnight stays in the wolf lodge are possible. There are also beach resorts (e.g. Dargun), child-friendly accommodation and boat offers.

Yes, the local history museum in Malchin (discovered by Siegfried Marcus), the Barlach Studio House in Güstrow, Mitsuko Castle as a Japanese museum and the Städtische Galerie Wollhalle in Güstrow.

Which places should you visit in Mecklenburg Switzerland?

Teterow

The Bergring town of Teterow is a well-known destination among motorsport fans: the Bergring race attracts racing fans from all over the world to the town every year. In addition to motorsport, Teterow and its surroundings also have plenty to offer hiking and culture enthusiasts - natural cycling and hiking trails as well as centuries-old castles and manor houses are just waiting to be explored.

Malchin

Surrounded by Lake Malchin and Lake Kummerow, leisure enthusiasts can indulge their passion during a visit to Malchin. Those interested in history should also visit the local history museum in the old town mill, which has a permanent exhibition on Siegfrid Marcus, the inventor of the world's first petrol-powered vehicle.

Güstrow

Güstrow has preserved its historic town center: here, classic brick Gothic architecture stands alongside buildings from the Renaissance period. Sculptor Ernst Barlach has also left his mark on his former home town – works by the famous artist can be found everywhere and cultural tourists can also visit his studio.

Dargun

The princes of Mecklenburg-Güstrow settled in the former monastery town in the 16th century. Today, the listed ruins of the former castle and monastery complex are a reminder of the town's proud past. The cultural achievements can also be admired on one of the numerous hiking trails that lead through the adjacent nature park "Mecklenburgische Schweiz und Kummerower See" (Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow), taking you past the sublime castles that characterize the region's landscape.
