Places where you can find amber

In search of the gold of the Baltic Sea

Published: November 3, 2025

Children hold a bowl of freshly collected amber and sand during a beach excursion on the Baltic Sea.

A walk by the sea. Salty wind on your skin. Waves rolling softly onto the shore. And then: a golden shimmer between seaweed and driftwood. Anyone out and about on Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's coast is embarking on a real treasure hunt in the midst of nature. The „gold of the sea“ has exerted a magical attraction on people for centuries. With a few practical tips, your vacation will be an unforgettable experience.

The best time to find amber

After stormy days, the Baltic Sea shows its mysterious side: wind and waves bring ancient treasures to the shore. Especially after fall and winter storms, flotsam, algae and litter accumulate on the beach - and that's exactly where you have a good chance of finding what you're looking for. Exploring the coast in the morning light will also increase your hit rate. So it pays to get up early. The months from October to March are considered peak season.

The most beautiful places to look for amber

Whether on Usedom, Rügen or the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, you can try your luck on many Baltic Sea beaches. Look out for stretches of beach where seaweed, wood or algae have washed up. The golden yellow stones, which shine particularly brightly in the sunlight, are often hidden among the shells and flotsam. Many places even offer guided amber hikes, which are ideal for families and beginners.

How to recognize real amber

Sometimes it is not so easy to distinguish amber from other stones. Real amber is light, warm to the touch and exudes a resinous scent when rubbed. You can easily test whether you have found real amber by placing the piece in salt water. Real amber usually floats on the surface, while stones and glass sink.

Tips for your amber excursion

  • Look for stalactites: Especially after a strong easterly wind
  • .
  • Use light: With a flashlight or headlamp, amber shimmers in a warm golden hue.
  • Be well equipped: Weatherproof clothing and gloves make the search comfortable.

If you are looking for amber, you should definitely make a detour to the stretch of beach at Binz auf Rügen. Rügen is generally regarded as one of the classic places to find amber on the German Baltic coast - so the chances of finding it here are good. The beach near Binz is very well equipped and easily accessible, but if you're looking for some peace and quiet, it's worth heading to one of the less busy sections.

Especially after a storm, the best time to go is early in the morning and search the beach at your leisure. Pay attention not only to the area directly at the water's edge, but also to the areas higher up and the fringes – this is where the most beautiful finds are often hidden.

2. Fischland-Darß-Zingst

If you are looking for a promising place to find amber, you should take a closer look at the northern part of Fischland. This region is often highlighted as one of the best places to find amber in the whole of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - so your chances are particularly good here.

The coastal section is partly natural, which adds to the charm of the area, but also requires some preparation: It's best to wear sturdy shoes and check the weather before you set off on your search. Be careful not only to search the sand, but also the seaweed, small pieces of wood and stones - that's where the golden yellow pieces often get caught. The visit is particularly worthwhile after a stormy night, when the wind and waves have brought new treasures to the beach.

If you want to try your luck at amber hunting, a visit to the Kühlungsborn coastline is also worthwhile. Although this section is not mentioned as often as other well-known sites, the entire coastline of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is known for the fact that amber is always found after storms.

The local infrastructure is good, there are several beach access routes, so you can get off to a comfortable start. It's best to set off directly after a storm early in the morning and keep a lookout in the spill area - that's where the small debris often collects. This region is often mentioned as a good place to look for amber, especially after spring or fall storms. The area is easily accessible by car or train, so you can set off without any problems. It's best to set off early in the morning and pay particular attention to the swell, especially when the sea is calm after a storm. As the beaches here are popular with locals and holidaymakers, it's worth starting early and exploring quieter stretches of beach to get your bearings in peace.

Good to know

When is the best time to find amber on the Baltic Sea?

You have the best chance of finding your golden find after fall and winter storms, especially from October to March. Be the first on the beach when the day awakens – then the treasures glisten undiscovered in the first light.

Where are the best places to look for amber in MV?

Promising places for your treasure hunt are the islands of Usedom and Rügen as well as the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. Keep your eyes open in areas where the sea attracts seaweed and driftwood; this is exactly where the gold of the sea often prefers to hide, in what is known as the fringes of the sea.

How do I know if my find is genuine amber?

Does your find feel light as a feather and surprisingly warm? That's a good sign! Rub the stone gently against your clothes – real amber exudes a delicate, resinous scent. The ultimate test for your sweetheart: in a glass of salt water, the gold of the Baltic Sea floats to the top, while ordinary stones simply sink to the bottom.

What equipment will help me find amber?

Be well prepared for your mountain adventure! Pack weatherproof clothing so that wind and weather can't harm you. Gloves will keep your hands warm. A special tip for the early morning hours or cloudy days: with a torch or headlamp, you can make the amber glow in a warm golden hue and discover it much more easily in the wet sand.

Under what weather conditions am I most likely to find amber?

You have the best chances after strong storms, when the choppy sea reveals its hidden treasures. Especially after a strong easterly wind, it is well worth exploring the fjord. When the wind really blows through the sea, it releases the light, fossilized resin onto the beach.

Are there also guided tours for amber hunting?

Many vacation resorts offer guided amber hikes, which are perfect for families and curious beginners. Experienced guides will show you what to look out for and tell you exciting stories about the "gold of the sea". This makes the treasure hunt an unforgettable experience for young and old, where you are guaranteed to learn something new.
