A cycle tour on the Szczecin Lagoon circular route is colorful and incredibly relaxing. It leads around the second largest lagoon in the Baltic Sea, pleasantly alternating between charming harbor towns and wide open spaces. If you cover the route in seven daily stages, you have enough time to indulge yourself - and you should definitely do that here.

The screeching of a mouse breaks through the peaceful urban buzz of the Hanseatic town of Anklam. The bird is sitting on the flat tower roof of St. Nicholas Church, peering curiously down at the two new arrivals. Perhaps it has identified Milena and Lukas as tourists. They have just got out of the ICE with their bicycles full of expectation to start their tour of the Szczecin Lagoon Circular Trail. They have dropped off their luggage, which is waiting for them at the Hotel Haffhus, their accommodation for tonight.

Seven days of cycling pleasure

The Szczecin Lagoon with its wide, open expanses of water is the second largest lagoon in the Baltic Sea. The circular cycle route is divided into seven daily stages, which are between 36 and 54 kilometers long and easily manageable for everyone. The 310-kilometre cycle route takes you along long stretches of the lagoon, passing places such as the seaside resort of Ueckermünde, Szczecin and the seaside resort of Ahlbeck. As half of the Szczecin Lagoon belongs to Poland (the border runs through the water), around half of the route runs through the neighboring country. Practical: the tour can be started anywhere and can be shortened in between with a ferry ride across parts of the lagoon. But Milena and Lukas want to do some serious pedaling today. And they set off eastwards from the Hanseatic town of Anklam in a good mood.

Cycle tour around the Szczecin Lagoon: a world in blue, beige and green

The landscape on the lagoon is magnificent! Wide stretches of water alternate with dry reeds and lush grass. Only the crunching of the tires, the gentle wind brushing against the grass and the polyphonic song of the birds accompany our cycling couple for the next few kilometers. Directly behind Anklam, a world has begun that seems to consist of only three colors: the blue of the water, the beige of the reeds and the green of the meadows.

Grey herons and cormorants stalk through the shallow water, swallows perform acrobatic flight manoeuvres in the sky and, with a little luck and patience, you can spot a colourful, buzzing kingfisher or its namesake, the great kingfisher, which is not a bird but a rare butterfly.

Sandy beaches and maritime tradition

After an hour and a half, when Milena and Lukas roll into the state-approved resort of Mönkebude, they are more than halfway through the day's stage. They make themselves comfortable on their picnic blanket with a fish sandwich from the Strandhalle restaurant. At the end of May, the beach is already well frequented; it even seems to be warm enough for swimming. Or to stand in the sea, because even about 30 meters from the shore, the water is just up to the adults' belly buttons. Directly behind the beach is the tranquil little harbor of Mönkebude. This is where the almost 100-year-old, highly polished Zeesboot Ghost rocks on the water, ferrying travelers to the island of Usedom on the opposite shore.

„Ten … eight … six“, echoes across the harbor promenade a little later as the two arrive at the seaside resort of Ueckermünde, the neighboring town of Mönkebude. The mighty Pomeranian cog Ucra is just returning from her three-day trip and is loudly instructed by a sailor. The 26-metre-long ship is a replica of a medieval Hanseatic cog made of dark oak, larch and Douglas fir - and a real eye-catcher.

And the pretty seaside resort of Ueckermünde is also worth a visit. The harbor is surrounded by a well-preserved old town full of architectural monuments. One street further on is the Pomeranian Residential Palace, which houses the Haffmuseum. And if you have time to spare, you can take a break at the Haffbad, Ueckermünde's beach. The sand there is wonderfully soft, and with the pretty, almost 100-year-old Strandhalle, there is some of the finest architecture to discover.

Finish at the mouth of the Uecker

Milena and Lukas decide to call it a day and quickly cover the last few kilometers back to the hotel. Their luggage and a delicious dinner are already waiting for them at the Haffhus in the Ueckermünde district of Bellin. The charming, thatched hotel is located right on the water, is certified sustainable and is even energy self-sufficient. After dinner, they grab a Ginger Hugo from the hotel bar and sit down on the small jetty to enjoy the sunset. Tomorrow evening they will already be in Poland. And after another five days, exactly on the opposite side of the lagoon on the island of Usedom. If they stick to the official stages. But that would be a bit of a shame. Because there is so much to see on the Szczecin Lagoon that you can take a little more time.
