In the political drama Yellow Letters, the 2026 Berlinale winner, a couple from the Turkish theater scene who are critical of the regime lose their jobs ...
Derya (Özgü Namal) and Aziz (Tansu Biçer), a celebrated artist couple from Ankara, lead a full life with their 13-year-old daughter Ezgi - until an incident at the premiere of their new play changes everything. Overnight, they are targeted by the state and lose their job and their home. They move to Istanbul, where they stay with Aziz's mother for the time being.
While Aziz ekes out a living with odd jobs and sticks to his convictions, Derya looks for a way out that will make her financially independent. Gradually, the distance between them and their daughter grows until they are forced to choose between their values and their future together as a family.
After the internationally acclaimed and award-winning film THE TEACHER'S ROOM, Oscar®-nominated director İlker Çatak once again presents an explosive and gripping masterpiece with YELLOW LETTERS.
The focus is on a couple who come under pressure from the arbitrariness of an authoritarian political system and have to choose between their ideals and conformity. Impressively carried by the Turkish acting stars Özgü Namal and Tansu Biçer, İlker Çatak creates an intense and highly topical drama about courage and power that focuses on the universal, major socio-political issues of our time.
YELLOW LETTERS brings together numerous renowned crew members who have already worked on THE TEACHER'S ROOM, including multiple award-winning cinematographer Judith Kaufmann (HELDIN), production designer Zazie Knepper, editor Gesa Jäger and composer Marvin Miller. The film was produced by if... Productions (producer: Ingo Fliess), together with Haut et Court (Paris) and Limanfilm (Istanbul).
YELLOW LETTERS celebrated its world premiere in competition at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Golden Bear for Best Film.
