Nature writing - "Writing nature" is more than just objectively describing nature, we leave that to the natural sciences. It is about what we perceive as subjective observers, storytellers and writers and what it means to us.
Every story and every crime novel has them: place and time. Both are more than mere backdrops, they create moods, can become part of the plot and point beyond themselves in their significance. How can we put down on paper what we see, hear, feel, smell and perhaps even taste in the natural world around us - and in such a way that our readers can also perceive it? As if they were standing in the middle of a moor at night, on a stormy beach or in a misty forest? How does a mere description of the landscape become a metaphor with a deeper meaning? Has the fallen tree simply always been there or does it stand for destruction and decline? On the contrary, does it symbolize space that has become free, in which new things can breathe and grow freely?
We immerse ourselves in nature, feel it, see it, hear it and find words to reflect and convey to our readers what moves us out there.
