Observation of cranes and wild geese on Lake Malchin and the huge flocks of starlings with a nature park ranger
The distinctive calls of cranes and northern wild geese echo across the landscape these days. Their voices can be heard from afar and herald the time of migration.
At the southern end of Lake Malchin, reed beds and sheltered shore areas offer the water birds ideal roosting places where they are safe from the harsh winds. Every evening, hundreds of cranes and thousands of wild geese return from their daytime feeding grounds to rest by the lake. Before they sleep, the animals spend time preening, bathing or enjoying a last treat. The spectacle of countless starlings settling in the reeds to spend the night together is particularly impressive. But the presence of so many birds also attracts their natural enemies: White-tailed eagles, marsh harriers and other birds of prey can regularly be seen scanning the area for prey.
On a total of four evenings, you have the opportunity to witness this fascinating natural spectacle from the observation tower near Dahmen. Equipped with binoculars and a spotting scope, a ranger from Mecklenburg Schweiz and Lake Kummerow Nature Park will accompany the excursion to the observation tower. Participants can meet on Fridays, October 2 and 9, at the sports field in Dahmen or on Saturdays, October 3 and 10, at the Ziddorfer Mühle. They both start at 5 pm.
On the observation tower, interested guests have the opportunity to linger until dusk and experience the impressive arrival of the cranes and geese at their roosting places up close.
