Documentary film screening. Original title: "An artist from Weißensee: Werner Klemke" by Kerem Saltuk, 2023
I am a photographer and documentary filmmaker. I was born and raised in Turkey and later emigrated to Canada. I moved to Germany in 2012 because of my wife (she is German). We lived in Weißensee-Berlin between 2000-2004. Both of our sons started school in Weißensee. They took the art class of Christine Klemke, daughter of Werner Klemke, there. That's why I learned and researched the name Werner Klemke. For me, the works and life story of Werner Klemke (1917-1994) were super beautiful, super interesting. I decided to make a documentary and that was a lot of fun between 2021-23. The premiere at the Peter Edel Cultural Center in Weißensee was sold out with 300 spectators. Unfortunately, many Werner Klemke fans couldn't find tickets. We did an additional date at the same venue and the center was full again. After that, Kino Toni, Babylon Berlin, Dresden, Rostock... many other screenings with great success. There's a lot in my documentary about art and the history of the GDR. It was a surprise for many viewers that a Turk made this documentary. Now we have Schwerin screening on 18.09.25 at 17:15 in the cinema Unterm Dach. This will be my first visit to Schwerin.
