The feature film tells the story of a young ethnologist who becomes a witness to the genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama in German South West Africa and in doing so crosses his own moral boundaries.
The film is set in Berlin at the end of the 19th century. At university, ethnologist Hoffmann comes under the influence of evolutionist racial theory and takes part in measuring skulls in order to legitimize the superiority of the white race. However, he wants to find counter-evidence and seeks contact with Kezia Kambazembi, an interpreter for a delegation of Nama and Herero who were forced to take part in a "Völkerschau".
