The town of Neustrelitz is showing the exhibition "Neustrelitz and the Strelitzia - a royal connection" in the town hall. It tells the story of the strelitzia's journey from its South African homeland to Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
The occasion is the "200 years of strelitzia blossom" anniversary in Neustrelitz. The first strelitzia plant in Germany bloomed in 1822 in the princely orangery in the palace gardens of the royal seat. The exotic flower was given the botanical name Strelitzia reginae in 1773 after the home of the British Queen Charlotte, who came from the ducal house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The "Queen's Strelitzia" came to Strelitz as a gift from the Queen in 1818. The Strelitzia has been the town flower of Neustrelitz since 1995.
The exhibition is complemented by exhibits provided by the Strelitzie Neustrelitz e.V. association, the Neustrelitz State Theatre and the Neustrelitz Tourist Information Office.
The exhibition in the town hall can be viewed until August 12, 2022 during opening hours (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm, Tuesday from 8 am to 5:30 pm, Friday from 8 am to 12 pm).
