Elias Ehrenwerth is a journalist living in present-day Berlin. When he is looking for a birthday present for his girlfriend Lisa, he discovers a leather suitcase at a junk shop with his girlfriend's initials on it. He finds a business card from its previous owner, Leonard Weinheber. He was a Jewish writer who was banned from his profession and was forced to emigrate to what was then Palestine.
Elias succeeds in retracing the events almost in detail. He meets people who, through their accounts, describe a time that still horrifies and sometimes amazes us today. What has shaped their experiences of history right up to the present day? Responsibility and awareness are the keys to responsible coexistence in all times.
