Public guided tour of the Fünfeichen Memorial in Neubrandenburg
The Fünfeichen Memorial commemorates the victims of National Socialism and Stalinism. It is one of the most important memorials in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and offers impressive insights into the history of the site.
History of the camp
During the Second World War, there was a Wehrmacht prisoner of war camp in Fünffeichen, through which around 120,000 soldiers and officers from various nations passed between 1939 and 1945.
Allied prisoners were mostly treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention, while Soviet soldiers were systematically disadvantaged. Many of them died of hunger, disease and abuse. After the Jewish population, they were the second largest group of victims of the Second World War.
After 1945, the Soviet occupying power continued to use the site and set up a special NKVD camp there. Suspected Nazi functionaries and people classified as "security risks" were interned here. By 1948, around 15,400 people were imprisoned - around a third did not survive the prison conditions.
