Experimental archaeologist and historian Joachim Krüger explains the production techniques of Stone Age tools and discusses the use of Rügen flint.
The Island of Rügen is rich in flint - a stone-rich island. Dark flint bands run through the chalk cliffs on the Jasmund peninsula. Just as numerous are the finds of prehistoric flint artifacts (axes, chisels, daggers, sickles) from the Neolithic and early Bronze Age. Was Rügen flint used for this? Or was it imported stone? There has long been a scientific debate as to whether the local raw material was suitable for the manufacture of large Stone Age tools - a case for experimental archaeology. In this richly illustrated lecture by experimental archaeologist and historian Dr. Joachim Krüger, the production techniques of Stone Age tools are explained and the possible use of the indigenous raw material is discussed.
