A catastrophe that must not be forgotten.
On the night of April 18-19, 1903, a severe storm blew up over the Baltic Sea from the northeast. It developed into a hurricane, raged for around 24 hours and once again brought heavy snowfall. The damage it caused on land was comparatively minor compared to other storm surges, but it ended in disaster for the crews of numerous ships. Coastal shipping was taken completely by surprise by this huge storm after the end of its winter break.
The Prerow-based author Bernd Goltings investigated a total of 30 hitherto little-known shipping accidents along the Baltic coast involving over 120 sailors. He is now presenting his findings in a lecture. The numerous, previously unknown photographs and dramatic original reports from survivors as well as documented rescue missions by the DGzRS create a moving picture of this almost forgotten catastrophe.
