Binding CO2 - protecting the climate: are oceans part of the solution?

Lecture with expert presentations

How can the sea help to protect the climate? This exciting question will be the subject of a public lecture with three short specialist presentations followed by a discussion on May 7 at 4 p.m. on the traditional ship in the IGA Park in Rostock-Schmarl.

Scientists from the CDRmare research mission will provide easy-to-understand insights into current research on CO₂ removal from the atmosphere and shed light on the role of oceans and coasts in climate protection. The focus is on both the potential and the risks of various methods - and the question of what significance they have for Germany's climate targets.

Environmental ethicist Lieske Voget-Kleschin will begin by explaining why CO₂ removal is necessary and what social challenges are associated with it. Natural scientists Anna Anschütz and Florian Stahl will then present two specific marine approaches: biological methods such as algae forests, seagrass and salt marshes, and accelerated weathering, a geochemical approach to increasing CO₂ uptake in the sea.

Afterwards, all participants are welcome to ask questions and join in the discussion.

The event is part of the accompanying program to the special exhibition at the Maritime Museum, in which the fictional city of "Turnton" in the year 2047 takes a look at possible future scenarios for dealing with climate change.
